2019 NAPABA Convention

Pankit J. Doshi | President

Happy New Year! On behalf of the NAPABA board of governors and staff, we wish all of you a very prosperous and fulfilling 2018.

This past month NAPABA proudly supported the nomination of Jill A. Otake to the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii. NAPABA also worked with the offices of U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth and Mazie Hirono and Representative Mark Takano to introduce the Korematsu-Takai Civil Liberties Protection Act. The legislation would make it clear that the discriminatory detentions endorsed in the U.S. Supreme Court Korematsu decision are prohibited and detentions or imprisonment based on protected characteristics, including race or religion, are barred.
We have a lot of exciting things happening in 2018 and I hope you will be able to join us and participate in our events and programming, including our upcoming regional conferences and Lobby Day. As you can see from below, our committees, networks, and affiliates around North America are very busy! Please also don’t forget to renew your NAPABA membership so that you continue to be a part of our big NAPABA family.
As the NAPABA board of governors joins the American Bar Association Midyear meeting next month in Vancouver, British Columbia, we look forward to partnering with the Ontario Chapter of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL), a NAPABA affiliate, and the rest of the FACL chapters locally to engage in more collaboration.
In this new year I hope that you will consider becoming a NAPABA Law Foundation (NLF) Vanguard or participate in the Planned Giving Program to support NLF as it continues to advance access to the legal system for Asian Pacific Americans.
Finally, don’t forget to watch this month’s edition of the NAPABA Inspirational Video Series, which showcases my friend and powerhouse, Mia Yamamoto, and her inspiring story.

Warm regards,

Pankit J. Doshi
