Candidate Statement

I am pleased and excited to be seeking your vote for NAPABA Vice-President of Membership. I have long been committed to the growth and success of NAPABA and its affiliates, and I look forward to the challenge and honor of serving you as an officer on the NAPABA Board.

Since 2010, I have served on the Board of Trustees for the Asian American Bar Association of Ohio. Established in 1992, AABA Ohio is the oldest association of Asian Pacific American attorneys in Ohio, and a proud NAPABA affiliate. For four years (2013-2017), I served as President of AABA Ohio, working tirelessly to reinvigorate the affiliate and address the pressing issues of member recruitment and engagement. During that time, I oversaw the creation of a mentorship program, a political/ judicial committee, a scholarship committee, and engaged in constant member outreach and event planning. I built the affiliate’s website, and have remained intimately involved in continuously assessing online membership management tools. AABA Ohio has once again become a well-recognized and respected local diverse bar association.

A year into my presidency, I pushed AABA Ohio to take on the monumental task of hosting the 2014 Central Region Conference, in Cleveland, Ohio. It was no small task for an affiliate that, at the time, had only a handful of active members. I co-chaired of the Conference and emceed the black-tie gala dinner. The event welcomed 200+ attendees, and included substantive, thought-provoking panels led by expert practitioners from all over the Central Region and nationally recognized guest speakers.

At the national level, I represented the NAPABA Central Region as Alternate Regional Governor (2014-2016); was selected for an At Large Board Member position on the Board of Governors (2016-2018); and was appointed as a chair of one of NAPABA’s largest and fastest growing committees - the NAPABA Young Lawyer Network (2015-2018). I currently sit on the Board’s Membership Taskforce, Wellness & Self-Care Taskforce, and Programming Taskforce. I have attended every NAPABA Convention since 2008, and participated in the Affiliate Leadership Summit at almost every convention - including leading the Summit at last year’s Convention. Learning about the challenges that the membership faces at the affiliate level has given me a deep appreciation for what NAPABA’s members are looking for in a bar association. Moreover, I have gained insight into the challenges that the members face as they try to determine how to stay engaged at both the local and national level.

I am therefore well-positioned to apply my leadership experience to the VP of Membership role. As NAPABA’s membership continues to grow and become more diverse, both geographically and ethnically, one of the biggest challenges for the organization is to continually reassess the interests of the entire membership, so that it remains relevant and accessible to all members and potential members. Among my goals for the coming year are:

1) to improve the leadership pipeline of young lawyers into the substantive law committees and integrate them into NAPABA generally. I began some of this work this past year by spearheading the pilot “Buddy Program,” which pairs more experienced NAPABA members with first-time NAPABA Convention attendees, and by passing a motion to formalize a leadership pipeline relationship from NAPALSA into NAPABA’s Young Lawyer Network.

2) To continue to build upon and improve the Affiliate Leadership Summit.

3) To reach out directly to affiliate Committee Chairs to encourage involvement in the corresponding NAPABA Committee leading to enhanced communication and participation in both.

4) To reassess NAPABA’s membership to determine if the regional system put in place years ago still reflects the current distribution of members nationwide.

I have already proven myself to be a strong and effective NAPABA leader. Please do not hesitate to contact me at BLum@Beneschlaw.com if you would like to discuss ways that I can better serve you and the NAPABA membership. It has been my pleasure to work at all levels of this organization, and I ask for your vote so that I can continue to serve you as VP of Membership.
