Candidate Statement

Having served in various capacities with NAPABA for decades, I now seek the position of Vice President of Finance & Development for one simple reason: to apply my years of fund-raising experience and relationships with law firms and corporate sponsors to elevate fundraising for the organization’s operations and to fuel enhanced services to its members, affiliates, the Law Foundation and the APA community. Also, my decades of practicing law and being active in NAPABA would lend context and perspective to Board and Executive Committee deliberations about important issues and policy decisions.

Goals for NAPABA and Alignment with Strategic Plan

My goals as Vice President will be consistent with the “goals” of the most recent Strategic Plan (2012-15) insofar as they depend on increasing funding from all sources so that NAPABA can increase its relevance, effectiveness and reach both internally and externally. Through leadership and determination, NAPABA has grown tremendously, but that means its responsibilities have likewise grown. NAPABA must constantly prove itself to its members, affiliates and other stakeholders as it demands more from them.

I envision my role as collaborating with fellow Executive Committee and Board members, staff and members to develop new strategies that will appeal to current sponsors and attract new ones as contemplated by the Strategic Plan. Every stakeholder’s interests must be addressed and met and we must balance the various goals that members hold including Goal #4 in the Strategic Plan to advocate for the APA community and to be a national voice for APA lawyers.

Challenges facing NAPABA

From a fundraising perspective, NAPABA’s challenges are not unlike those of other organizations that have experienced phenomenal growth. NAPABA’s growth challenges members’ abilities to connect with each other and to see the benefit of attending its events, including the national convention. The same goes for law firms and corporations upon whom we depend for financial support.

I sense there are many who feel less connected to NAPABA or its mission and find it increasingly difficult to find value in donating energy, time, and money, all of which are scarce resources. In sum, NAPABA’s greatest challenge is remaining relevant to existing members and stakeholders and to appeal to prospective members and donors so that the organization can continue to expand and sustain itself in a collegial, collaborative way. We need to remind ourselves of how and why NAPABA was created and to retain personal relationships as we continue to grow together.
